Rav Pinchos Teitz being maspid Rav Avrohom Yaffen on his radio program

Very high praise for Rav YaffenNovardok and their activities in Europe from Rabbi Teitz. Which makes me wonder; why is someone like Rabbi Teitz forgotten and sidelined by the "Bnei Torah?" We see how much he did for the Olam haTorah and how he raised money for them, and how he trumpeted their cause! Weird.

These pictures were published several years in the Kfar Chabad magazine, after shluchim in Russia found it in his granddaughter's house in Moscow, I believe. So there's no great "giluy" here. I just happened to come across it while searching something else and thought I'd share. He lived in Vitebsk all his life and passed away in 5695. So the Rebbe מהר"ש had a great granddaughter in Russia, you say? was she frum, you ask? What was the Rebbe and the Frierdige Rebbe's shaychus to her? Did he have other children? Were THEY frum? I beat you to it...

A brief biography

why the frum press is downright depressing these days

I'm not sure why this hit me today while reading a certain paper, and whether or not it's just this Pesach season that elicits this reaction within me, but this was the case today. Read the papers carefully these and what do you find? it's one of several things: 1) ads asking for קמחא דפסחא etc. 2) sales for clothing and stuff you can't afford 3) worse yet, ads for Pesach in extravagant locations that only the 1% can afford, or 4) features on organizations that distribute food etc. And not much else. I'm not complaining, papers need to make money, and they do that through selling ads. But why would I want to read them? All I see is tens of thousands of Jews suffering hunger and disease. There's little I can do to help. I can't possibly help all of them, there's just too many. So I just turn the page and sigh. Maybe I get a שטיקל התעוררות תשובה seeing all those who ר"ל need a רפואה שלמה, So maybe it does have some affect on me. What about the fancy clothes and hotels, you ask? What about the לפני עור that they're עובר on for making me want that which I cannot afford? טאקע א שווערע שאלה. I cannot answer that, but maybe that's what the עיני העדה meant when they discouraged people from reading newspapers. טמא'נע בלעטער is a חידוש that you may not read? אלא מאי they were referring to the kosher ones. If so, if they're kosher, why not read them? מוז מען זאגען because of the ads.

The Satmar Rebbe holds nothing back when meeting with the Zvehiller Rebbe, Reb Mordche, of Yerushalayim in 5723. The עגל הזהב was not ע"ז ממש, but ציונות is... You can tell that the SR is somewhat annoyed by the ZR's "בטלנות" when it comes to getting his finances in order. It'll take but a few minutes to read all the pages. Click on images to enlarge.

He was 98 and one of the last of the יח"ל תלמידים. We'll make no bones about it, he had a nasty, nasty, פיסק, and nobody was spared his ugly wrath. I'm not quite sure where he took the ברייטקייט to speak that way about the giants of yesteryear, but he did. One Agudist told me when I told him the news "תהא מיתתו כפרתו", and who can argue with that? You guys were kind enough to send me the link to Shturemthat had the following two letters. Thank You. I do believe that in later years he changed his mind about the Rebbe too. This is busy season for me, so cut me some slack, please. They did cut out a piece of the letter from him to the Rebbe, as is plainly obvious. I wonder what it says there...

He too seems to bear a personal grudge against anything and everything in the medinah, even as far back as 1949. And this was a country barely a year old, yet he belittles its streets, shops, architecture, and even jewelry stores!

Rav Teitz at the radio studio delivering his shiur (Source)

A biography, courtesy of GoogleBooks

Starting this Wednesday, and iy"h every Wednesday for some time, we will feature a recording of the late Rav Mordche Pinchas Teitz's Daf HaShavua that was taught on the late WEVD Yiddish radio, 1050 on your AM dial. The shiurim will start with מסכת חגיגה and will go על הסדר so that you can have a גמרא nearby and follow along. This way we do several things: 1) teach Torah, which is always good. 2) bring you a period in our history that is no more.  3) made a shtikkel zikaron to the late Rav Teitz, who is in many ways forgotten about in the Charedi world. And 4) do our part to keep Yiddish even more alive on the internet. Please enjoy, shteig away, and comment!

(Pitputim Photo)

Dear frum Jews: The Forward does not care if your kids get molested.

This isn’t an exaggeration, a joke or some kind of bombastic Avi Shafran style rhetoric. It's an inescapable and repugnant conclusion. For those of you not keeping track, at a recent Rabbinic conference in London, Rabbi Hershel Schachter, one of the foremost Halachic decisors of the generation, said unequivocally that there is no issue of Mesirah in handing over abusers to the police. Mesirah, he averred, refers to a situation where an illegitimate government is trying to confiscate Jewish property. It has nothing to do with reporting abusers to the police. After covering Weberman and Finkelstein so assiduously, after publishing the demonstrations of Judy Brown, the Forward should’ve been delighted. "Yeshiva Rabbi Bluntly Warns Sex Abuse Reports Are Required”-- That’s the headline you should’ve opened up to on Friday morning. A premier posek, not a professional controversy hound like Yosef Blau, not a fourth rate YCT rabbi struggling with Rashi script, said almost exactly what you’d want him to say. Certainly, if the Forward cared about your kids, this’d be newsworthy. Think your Boro Park rabbis knows the laws of Mesirah? Nope. Not anymore. Think that its ok to cover for someone on unsere team? Turns out, you’re going against Halachah. Think your punctiliousness with shemirath eynayim will save you from your shemirath yadayim issue? Turns out, it doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately for him, Rabbi Schachter added some caveats. He didn’t stop with this powerful denunciation of the major problem plaguing Orthodox Jewry today. He noted that Federal Prisons are fair and accommodating of Orthodox Jews. And then he said that state prisons can sometimes be hefker. They might put you with a “schvartze," - pause -  a black Muslim who wants to kill all the Jews.

There are two possibilities here. Larry Cohler-Esses says he I felt "I knew this man like I knew some of my own relatives." He must be sure that RabbiSchachter paused to reemphasize his irrational hatred of people of color and Muslims. I know Rabbi Schachter pretty well too. It seems to be he said an offensive term, one he might’ve been habituated to from his upbringing as a Yiddish speaker. Then he paused, corrected himself, and specified that he meant a member of the Nation of Islam. The Nation of Islam has a large prisoner contingent. They utilized “bigoted and anti-Semitic rhetoric” the ADL’s words, not mine that “has included statements calling whites "blue eyed devils" and Jews "bloodsuckers" that controlled the slave trade, the government, the media, Hollywood and various Black individuals and organizations.” Schachter might not be right to be too concerned about the future cellmates of the Webermans and Lanners of the world. He certainly should’ve avoided the outdated and offensive term schvartze - a word that, while not laden with the hate of a racial epithet, is equivalent to “Negro” in its anachronism. This would all be a major issue if he wasn’t in the middle of solving the major crisis of Orthodox Jewry today.

Sadly for the Forward, he was. He was giving Halachic sanction to people who speak out about abuse. He was doing more to end it from the inside than the Forward could do with a million Judy Brown stories. He digressed, opined, added in colorful and misshapen linguistic infelicities. He didn’t do this because of his intense racial or religious bigotry or his love of abusers. He did it because he’s Rabbi Schachter. Rabbinic authority doesn’t come out of thin air. Schachter’s corresponds to what Max Weber called charismatic authority. He is a raconteur, a Yiddish storyteller and king of caveats. If you want a story about R' Velvele Soloveitchik, an obscure teshuvah from the Koziglover Gaonor a scintillating conceptual distinction first proposed by Yerucham Fishel Perlow and then mercilessly plagiarized, Rabbi Schachter is one of the only living people who can give you that. Besides his stand on abuse, Schachter is also a moral voice in other areas. He’s condemned the practice of Metzizah bePeh since it endangers infants. He courageously stood up in public in Ami magazine urging reform of the corrupt system of Batei Din. He lends his weight to an interminable and acrimonious battle on behalf of agunot; a battle that's earned him the ire and opprobrium of vast segments of Haredi Jewry. It's doubly impressive that Schachter’s mastery of vast corpses of Rabbinic literature and his spellbinding storytelling and sense of humor are yoked to a moral vision so idiosyncratic and so obviously based on doing what he thinks is the right thing.

What’s so disturbing about this story is that Rabbi Schachter is being skewered for being Rabbi Schachter. The off the cuff style, exaggerated anecdotes and Yiddishisms that lend him his power and charisma are what keep getting him in trouble. The same Rabbi who uses words like ferd and schvartzer also cries (in this same lecture) about someone coming to observe the laws of Taharas Hamishpacha. He laments his own public position --- “The Ribono Shel Olam is a Kel Mistater.” He breaks down in tears describing his own teacher, Rabbi Soloveitchik, and his impact on him. I’m not saying Rabbi Schachter shouldn’t be more circumspect about his choice of words. Though it’d rob us of his charm, it might be a necessary concession to the constraints of publicity placed on him by virtue of his position. Maybe we will lose these unguarded moments. Maybe a story about Rabbi Belkin or Rabbi Yerucham Gorelick will go down unrecorded because Rabbi Schachter will hesitate to say it. However, if you want abuse to end, and you want to take away the fig leaf of “Halachic” protection deployed by abusers, you might not want to bash Rabbi Schachter. If you want Orthodoxy to wake up to its internal problems and start handing people over to the authorities --- boker tov. This is what that looks like. Of course, if all you want pious nostrums about the word schvartze and long winded stories of the duplicity of the Orthodox about abuse --- Rabbi Schachter isn’t your guy. Ask the ADL and the
Forward.

No, not because he gets to be himself all the time. Not because he gets to wear a rainbow tallis, I have no such תאוה, believe me. For me a snow-white Chabad tallis with wide black stripes is much more of a תאוה, and I can wear it without looking like a fool too! But because he gets to hop a plane, literally, and go back to the alter heim to see where his ancestors lived and breathed.

Dear Hirshel;

I have read your blog since day 1 and comment on almost every post that I have something to add. I have to confess I recently attended a mitzva tantz, and a saw the real dilution of a concept that once was holy and pure, and how it's become a show, no better than bringing in the kallah to the men and all the bochurim singing eishes chayil to her... Yet the people who practice these tentzlech would never, ever, ever bring the kallah in to the men during dancing... so I thought: where better than this choshu've blog to write about it?

The father of the bride, a pseudo talented shnook, decided that it is his night, and he will suck up all the oxygen of the night, plus he has a young father that is nebech stricken with a terrible disease R"L, and a shver that nebech suffers from another debilitating disease R"L - the shver too is very young. The people are anoshim p'shutim with lots of Emunas Tzadikim and Emunos T'feilos... strange combination of Shtreimlech, thick Gartlech, but super baalbatish at the same time. For obvious reasons I cannot be more graphic than that. Now to the point; the father called up his daughter the bride to his mitzva tantz with a prepared booklet of grammen that he prepared on his own, and begins his performance. He spoke of many things, from the crying for his father's refua, which these fools believe that Mitzva Tantz is the holiest time of the year and can "po'el alles gits" at that time... Forget about all the days of Tishrei or Seder nacht.... and then he went on and on how much he loves his daughter and how much he loves his wife and how great she is, on and on... I haven't the pen nor the vocabulary to describe the deep romanticism that was displayed there - and besides, this is a frum, family blog.... - all in front of a big family from both sides.... Then the dancing started with the daughter in a nice beat, with crying and hugging, then danced around her and hugging again .... the crowd was mesmerized by this spectacle...obviously the cheap jokes started flowing and still are till today.... The women almost ran out of tissues and the badchen had a nice, long cigarette break... so Reb Hirshel, this is the future of these events for the upcoming shnooks of the baalbatish new generation? not by New Square or Vizhnitz-Monsey families... but It will be the norm in a certain segment, which is already not small and gets bigger daily, לדאבונינו. So does the Rav of Shopron the Baal "Toras Alef" guarantee that no Hirhur happened that night?
